One of the things I’ve been looking forward to as a mom of two daughters is getting to play with some of my old toys again. They’ve already laid claim to all my stuffed animals but my American Girls dolls and Muffy Vanderbear and Floppy Vanderhare are still safely tucked away. When I was growing up, I was  a Molly girl (mine is circa 1988), I took such good care of her that I have a ton of her original accessories (alas her rain coat is disintegrating despite being kept in an plastic bin) and although her head was replaced at one point (a moving company squashed her head and had to send her to the doll hospital) she is still the same Molly I grew up with and loved. I also have Felicity who came out when I was 12 and she is in near mint condition which is lucky since she is now retired. Knowing that Molly is on the brink of retirement and Felicity is gone (dammit now I’ll never get her party dress) has made me decide to hold out on giving my girls these dolls until they are MUCH older. And yes, 8 year old me has the sads from not getting Samantha and Kirstin as well now that I know they were retired too. Yeah yeah I know…my first world problem of only growing up with 2 American Girls dolls is breaking your hearts.

The Original 3

Since my youngest will be turning 2 in July and LOVES baby dolls, I’ve been contemplating either a Bitty Baby or taking the girls to get a set of Bitty Twins and having them share. On one hand, it feels weird to give my 3 year old a present on her sister’s birthday but my 3 year old is a Christmas Day baby and pretty much everyone gets gifts on her birthday so it sort of seems fair in a way. Plus we decided to do parties every other year and family only celebrations are the name of the game this one.

My only issue with the Bitty Twins is that there aren’t ones that look similar to my kiddos. Now when it comes to baby dolls, my youngest has so many shapes, colors and sizes that she looks like Angelina Jolie when she carries them all around at once. However, my 3 year old is into her sister and her dressing the same and looking like each other and I think they’d get a kick out of dolls that had brown hair and blue eyes.

There are loads of options for the Bitty Baby but only a handful of hair/eye combinations for the twins and Brown Hair/Brown Eyes and Blond Hair/Blue Eyes just seems like a very limited selection. I would have loved to have one twin with curly brown hair and blue eyes and another with straight brown hair and blue eyes but it seems that the option isn’t available until you graduate to the full 18 inch doll and I would have to be hopped up on more the Trader Joe’s wine to cough up a 100 dollar plus doll for a child that will not be wiping her own ass for the foreseeable future. The age recommendation for the Bitty Baby and Bitty Twins is 3 and up and the rest of the AGC is 8 and I’m guess most of this is due to the size of the accessories (as well as price).

Bitty Twins

Come play with us Danny…forever and ever and ever.

Come on look at the two Blonde twins….they look like Village of the Dammed. I love American Girls dolls but these look more ominous then squishy and adorable. For whatever reason, the blond ones are the only ones with their mouths open as well.

Considering I’m the only dark hair and brown eyed member of my family (no I’m not the damn nanny thank you very much) I’d be tempted to get these since they at least would look more like me then my own kids, but ultimately I’ll have to see how badly things go when I actually unleash the niblets upon the American Girls Store.

Update: As of June 27th, they updated the Bitty Twins outfits and my inner OCD just cannot spend 115 dollars on something that has an asymmetrical hemline and ugly shoes. I’m looking for alternative dolls because this mama is not buying anything that looks like it stumbled out of the 90s. I contacted American Girl to see if I could buy the old dolls and they could only suggest me buying the dolls AND the separate outfits. Um no.
